Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 establishes a mandatory, risk based legal framework for artificial intelligence. Under this legislation, the CRR acts as the designated Market Surveillance Authority for cableways and is preparing for potential expanded responsibilities in relation to AI used within the rail sector.
Ireland operates a distributed oversight model, formalised through the forthcoming Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Bill 2026. Central governance structures, including a National AI Office, are required to be established by August 2026. European legislation categorises AI systems according to their risk and potential impact on safety and fundamental rights.
The EU framework categorises AI systems according to risk. AI used as safety components in regulated transport systems, and in certain critical infrastructure use cases, is classified as high‑risk and subject to stringent regulatory oversight. Other AI applications may be subject only to transparency obligations or no mandatory requirements.
